Shibuya-O “Dream On!” KPop Cover Dance Fes’ 2011 featuring Rino Nakasone

We all know that KPop idols are hot hot hot property in Japan right now. So many Korean idols are crossing over to make their Japanese debuts faster than you can say ‘Konnichiwa’!

And what better way to prove KPop’s rising popularity in Japan than a massive KPop dance festival? The Shibuya O-Group recently held the “Dream On!” KPop Cover Dance Fes’ 2011, which featured different Japanese crews doing some epic covers of KPop choreography.

And their special guest is somebody you’re very familiar with: none other than RINO NAKASONE, internationally-known dancer, and the famed SME choreographer (the lady behind the dances for ‘Hoot’, ‘Love Like Oxygen’, ‘Nu Abo’, among many others)!

The best part? Fangirl Diaries was able to get official media coverage of the event!

FGD’s Tokyo correspondent Nana lets us in on the action that went down in Shibuya last January 6. Scroll down for some mind-blowing photos of the event!

Show Highlights

The whole show was jam-packed with jaw-dropping action, but Nana recounts the highlights of the festival below:

[ SNSD Fever in Tokyo! ]

SNSD obviously had the most popular choreographies – the teams mainly did Hoot, Genie and Oh! (perhaps because they were all choreographed by Rino?), but there were also performances of Run Devil Run, Into the New World and Show!Show!Show!.

[ Fantastic costumes: Japan is the home of cosplay, after all ]

The Run Devil Run performance was one of my personal favorites because the outfits where exactly like the hooded ones the girls wear in the MV. Same goes for the KARA Mister performance! With Japan being the home of cosplay, the level of skill and effort put into some of the outfits was really impressive. (And I spotted one of the girls in the Beast group wearing Kokon To Zai, one of the boys brands for Breathe – very envious!)

[ Kid dance groups stealing the spotlight ]

Other personal favorites was the 2NE1 group that did Clap Your Hands in military style outfits – Doc Martens boots, black cargo pants, and grey camouflage hoodies, everyone sporting the same braided hairstyle! They had one of the most high energy performances, and it was incredible to see a group of kids (I don’t think any of them were over fifteen) dance with an intensity that could give 2NE1 a run for their money!

[ f(x) and SHINee face some fierce Japanese competition ]

The F(x) cover by K(x) was another favorite – the girls were spunky and charismatic on a level which really made them stand out. Oh, and bonus points to BTICK for being the only all male dance team, and for performing an impressive medley of some of SHINee‘s most intense dances, including Ring Ding Dong and Lucifer! (Well, the only male dance team apart from Orange KAMAMEL, who put on a hilarious performance of who else than candy-sweet Orange Caramel‘s A~ing and Magic Girl!)

[ The fabulous & sweet Rino Nakasone: The perfect epitome of Japan+KPop ]

Of course, the absolute highlight of the evening was seeing none other than the fabulous Rino Nakasone — member of Beat Freakz, GEMINIZ and the Harajuku Girls, and of course the choreographer to all your favorite SM idols — perform some of her most famous choreographies. Rino also sat down with the MCs for a talk in Japanese, telling her story of how she went from memorizing Michael Jackson dances in Okinawa, to working with Janet Jackson in the States. She has a wonderfully bubbly and sweet personality – though she herself insists she not cute. Rino also brought a crew of nine dancers, both boys and girls, with her from the States, who performed Genie, Oh and Hoot, in perfect sync!
